For standard tuning, why are all adjacent strings 5 steps apart except for strings 2 -> 3? Is there some practical reason for that, some musical logic behind it?

itstuned to b to make chords easier to play. however on a bass guitar with five strings it would be tuned a min2 or one step higher to c to make scales easier to play.

Five frets is two and a half step (five semi-tones). Since the scale is twelve semi-tones this doesn’t add up. If we were to tune all six strings with the same interval, going from E6th to the first string, the 2nd string would be tuned C and the first string would be F, instead of E. That would probably be quite awkward, I believe...
