When playing a solo you are like an artist that has been given a canvas with a basic background on it, and have been asked to 'paint a picture'. So - what you have to decide is what picture will you paint with the background you have been given? The same goes with music. It depends on the type of music you will solo to. Is is a happy song (major scales?) sad song (minor scales?) really sad (blues scale?) energetic song (mixolydian scale?). What I would suggest is you practice different scales so you have a 'library' of them in your head, then listen to the song you are going to solo in and choose from your library. Just like an artist you can always start again if you don't like it!!

This is a great answer. Also think about the BPM you don't normally get fast sad songs or slow happy songs!
