so ive been playing guitar for about 2 years, ive gotten really good and know a ton of chords and im really good at lead and rhythm. im good but i wanna get better and the only thing holding me back is scales, i honestly dont know where to begin with them or where to start or how to get the best information. i was wondering if anyone could give me a crash course of like if they could guide me on what to learn first and where to go from there. if anyone knows any good books, then please drop a line. hopefully this question can help others too |

It's good that you don't immediately associate lead with scales, because that is one of the many pitfalls of the beginning guitarist. If you want to use scales to greatest effect, they need to be tied into chords. This lets you play great sounding leads every time, and it gives you a starting point for learning how to play like other people: lead and rhythm. The answer to your question: Get a beginning music reading book and learn how to read notes: scales are kind of useless without knowing what notes you're playing, and learning to read music is a no nonsense, universally known way of doing that. I would google "CAGED system." Check youtube for lessons from Robben Ford, his chord lessons will teach you the flow, and there's a good one by Bill Keith, a banjo player who really knows what's up. |
