I can read typical chord sheets, and I can figure out tabs if I puzzle over them long enough, but I'm nowhere near being able to look at tabs and play them in real time. What's the best way to get started with tabs? Is there a good online tutorial or lessons with practice suggestions?

Tabs are a do it yourself kind of thing.

You listen to the song then look at the tabs and piece together what is going on. This is a good and bad way to learn things. On the good side you have to listen and figure things out for yourself, and maybe use the scientific method a little. On the bad side you may not learn as quickly like this if you understand direct instruction better.

Tabs are still a quick and easy way to become acquainted with the notes of a song so you can dive in and start trying to mimic what you have heard. Learning a long fast solo with tabs will test your resolve none the less.
