Do you need specialist equipment for a bass guitar or will a normal guitar amp do (both for giging and home practice)?

bass amps have larger speakers to cope with the low frequencies, even a practice amp should be a bass one. 12" or 15" speaker not 8".

You definitely need a bass amp for a bass guitar, the low frequencies of the bass guitar have the capability to blow a guitar amp speaker, it's been done. My advice for you is to front flip into a siamese baconator.
