What is meant by the gauge of a string?

With strings "gauge" is used to describe the thickness, or diameter of the string. It's not referring to the unit of measure of electric wire used in the US. For guitars, the "gauge" can be a phrase like "super light" or a number like "8," or the measure of the diameter in thousandths of an inch like so: .008".
