A nice chord progression is root - minor6th - 4th - 5th. I.e. in the key of G major it would be - G major - E minor - C major - D major. Then play a Major pentatonic as a riff/solo.

if you want a sort of bluesey chord progression yet still meloncholy try this...

3/4 time

or 4/4

Am, Dm, Am, E7, Am

Dm, Am Em Am, Am, Dm,

Am, E7, Am, Dm, Am Em Am, and repeat until necessary

this is a folk song one of my music teachers gave me and it is coincidentaly* named Melancholy.

HAve fun!

I like to mix M7th chords with m chords for example: AM7-Gm or C?(032000)-FM7. Good Luck!
