I have a small amp and I love its tone. However it's not loud enough for a gig. Can I 'mic' it up through the PA or is it better to buy a bigger amp'.

As long as you use a decent microphone i.e. Shure SM58 or even a condenser mic (but make sure the PA has phantom power) you should get the same tone through the PA. You can then crank up the volume! BUT - be sure to place the amp and mic where it won't get knocked OR pick up unwanted noise.
