What is a guitar pedal? Is it like the ones on my push-bike and the faster I pedal the faster I play?

A guitar pedal, also known as a effect pedal or a stompbox, is a device that plugs into your electric guitar's signal path. You use pedals to alter the sound your guitar makes. Some examples would include: distortion (makes guitar fuzzy), chorus (makes one guitar sound like many), pitch shifting (changes the pitch of your guitar), among many other effects as well.
