I have heard the term 'dropped D' or 'Dropped C'. What does this mean, does it mean I don't play any of the 'dropped' notes i.e. I drop them?

What you're hearing is the names of different tunings, but they're called "Drop D" and "Drop C", respectively.

Drop D comes from E standard tuning. E standard tuning is (from low to high): E A D G B E To get drop D you have to tune the low E string (6th string) down a whole step to a D and that's it!

The same applies for drop C, but instead of using E standard tuning to start with, you're starting with D standard, which is (from low to high): D G C F A D and then you tune the low D string (6th string) down a whole step to a C note. Pretty simple :)
