What does the '440' stand for on my tuning fork that I use to tune the A string to on my guitar?

The '440' stands for 440 hertz, which is the frequency of the note you are tuning your A string to. I recommend taking some form of physics lesson about waves and sound if you want to really get an in-depth look at what it means.

Every note has a set frequency (western music was set at 'A' =440.00Hz in 1939). Middle C is therefore 261.63Hz and an octave above that would be twice the frequency i.e. 523.55. Yes - not quite double, and that leads us to equal temperament which is well worth researching if you get a chance!
