im trying to learn this song on the guitar but i dont know how to read music or anything. i teach myself and play by ear...... on the sheet its telling me the chords to play but then its saying these numbers and they look like this:
so on and so forth, i like dont even know what these letters are suppose to mean or these numbers...i think the letters might represent the strings? But i dnt know the names of the strings i just tell them by 6 5 4 3 2 1 haha..... can somebody tell me what all this means cuz i really dont know lol :) thanks:) |

those are called tabs. and yes the letters refer to the string name (low to high- e a d g b e) and the numbers are the frets you are supposed to play in the order of the song on the string it tells you to. from top to bottom on the tab it goes high to low, so the low e is on the bottom, and the high on the top. tabs are much easier i think than sheet music and are extremely useful when learning a new song (as long as it is a good tab and you can tell that by the rating of it that most tab sites have) the site ultimate-guitar.com is a great tab website with reliable tabs for almost any song you could ever want. hope i helped! -Stone |

To caution the reader about tabs. Here is my one argument for music reading over tab: the key to music theory is in "standard notation." Unless you are a genius, and I mean a genius, you will need some system of music theory to become a controlled, nearly perfect musician. Music theory through standard notation is a system that's been used and developed for centuries. It's a language musicians use to communicate. Find a teacher who can teach you basic reading, then decide where to go from there. |

I agree with he said, and i also recommend getting the Power Tab or Guitar Pro software. They allow you to listen to Power Tab or Guitar Pro tabs and make your own tabs. Power Tab is free but isnt as good as Guitar Pro. Theyre really helpful for timing or if youre not quite sure how a part of a song is susposed to sound |

Don't ever think you 'can't read music' because you probally can. Music comes in many forms for different instruments i.e. 'TAB'(introduced 1500 years before the piano score by Mr Pythagoras) or lyrics with chords over the top. These are ALL music and if you can play a song by 'reading' them you are reading music, in fact ANYTHING written on paper that enables you to play a song is written music. It is a common misconception that reading music is reading the little dots on lines - not so! So when next asked 'can you read music' your answer should be 'what sort of music do you mean'. $teve Zodiac www.evansongs.co.uk |
