I discovered that my LED tuner would fail me when tuning under midday sunlight. I've seen LCD based tuners, but the one that I tried didn't seem to work very well. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive LCD tuner that works well? |

I think any LCD display might be difficult to see in sunlight too. You could try your luck with an analog guitar tuner that has a real needle instead of a digital display. 1
I was actually playing outdoors with a guy who had one and the LCD was visible, I just didn't think to ask him where he got it.

(Aside: I just did a lot of reading, during which I discovered awesome guitar videos on PlanetWave, which also makes tuners.) As for the tuner, given your likely budget and stated needs, the following seem a good fit. They all have a back-lit screen and clip onto your instrument.
