What if a chord diagram does not indicates to mute or play strings open? Like this:

e----------
B-2--------
G-2-------
D-2--------
A----------
E----------

Would it be an A?

Thanks

Just wondering, but how did you get the dashes that represent the guitar strings up there in your post and get it to have the grey box around it? Did you just type them in there yourself, or did you use the thing in the box where you type in your question called "horizontal rule"? I've been wanting to write a question where I write out a tab, but didn't know how to go about doing it since I'm kinda new here...

@JoviGoo He just typed the dashes himself, and to get the gray box: 1.)write out your tab, 2.) highlight it, 3.) and press the code button in the text editor (it looks a series of 0s and 1s).

@AP Thanks! I'll try that!

What you have written is 'guitar tab'. With 'tab' only play the strings indicated, in your example only play the 3 strings which will give you the notes E A and C# which is the chord of A major, albeit as expalained in the answer above it is an inversion (a second inversion in this case) and therefore should be written A/E. Chord 'boxes' however will have an 'x' or 'o' over the tops of the strings which indicate to either not play the string or play the string open. It's an inversion of A. Since this chord has an E as the bass note, it would normally be called A/E. You can always use the JGuitar Chord Namer to answer these types of questions.
