I've a bluesy kind of melancholy song happenin...or not as the case may be. Basic riff is Em - Am Looking for somewhere to take it that a) kind of gives hope, but b) keeps the melancholy. I'm still a relative novice at composition, but know all my basic chords, 7ths some sus 4 and sus 2. Originally I wrote it D A D G, with a progression through D7 to the chorus G D G D A7 A G D. Whilst it's a kind of redemption type thing about hitting rock bottom and finding the way out, it's almost too happy, even tho the 7ths do give it that little bit of melancholy. However, I started singing it finger picking Em->Am and it makes it changes the nature of the song. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Ian Barrowford Bluesman. |

I don't know if you have a certain key in mind, but I would suggest 7th and m7th chords while staying away from a lot of Major chords. |

My idea would be to add maj7 chords. Perhaps for the chorus, they would give you that hope+melancholy, use a couple, with random roots, and mix stick another minor chord in for emphasis. An effective use of this is from the band Wilco. They do it often. Beach boys pet sounds may also be a good place to lift chord changes. |
