I'm going to assume you've covered all the basics, implementing legato, alternate picking, tapping, and sweeping into your playing. If not, master them. Otherwise, just run drills. Set your metronome to a speed you are comfortable with and play to it. Then increase the speed a little and find what speed it is you're hitting that 'brick wall', and really focus on that tempo. As is true with all skills, practice makes perfect, but if you aren't diligently working on your weaknesses you will stay in a rut, so decide how dedicated you are and put in all the time you can. Remember, virtuosos like Steve Vai practice somewhere around the area of 12 hours a day! Once you reach a certain level of mastery it takes more intensive practice to improve. You also may want to check out a book called 'Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar' by Troy Stetina, I know it has helped me immensely. Good luck! |
