The explosive popularity of the video game Guitar Hero over the past several years has increased overall interest in the guitar as a musical interest. Countless Guitar Hero fans, young and old, have taken the plunge into learning to play the guitar for real after finding inspiration in the game. Any guitarist who has ever played Guitar Hero knows that the skills required for one are quite different than the skills required for the other. So to learn to play the guitar, one would have to unlearn some Guitar Hero skills. Even so, given the amount of new guitarists playing today that are directly influenced by Guitar Hero, is Guitar Hero a good introduction to the guitar as an instrument? |

Not necessarily, it's for for loosening up your fingers as a sort of warmup. But for actual preparation for the instrument I'd say that it is absolutely not of any use to you whatsoever. If you really want to learn how to play the instrument head over to your local pawn shop and pick up a cheap guitar and a nice little practice amp. Just keep in mind that it's not an easy path when you're just getting started. You will want to quit playing for days, weeks, or even months at a time. And that's okay, just make sure that you return every once in awhile and make sure you keep sparking your interest in what you're doing. |

I would say no. It seems that the little plastic controller utilizes different muscles than an actual guitar, which would explain why Slash has a hard time playing November Rain on Guitar Hero (lol). However, I can think of several cases where someone played GH and then started learning the real instrument, and one guy who got a drum set after playing Rock Band, so I do think these games are good for something ;-) |
