does a capo make the song sound any better? what exactly does a capo do anyway?

A capo just holds down the strings on a certain fret so you can modulate a song up to a higher key without having to change your chord fingerings. In other words the notes you play will have a higher pitch with the capo on, but they won't necessarily sound better.

Right, and as long as your capo isn't going too high (say past fret III), the sound won't be terribly different. The higher up you go, the more like a ukulele or mandolin it will sound---you lose the lower end and some sympathetic vibrations, resulting in a higher and less "rich" or "full" tone.
