Well, when they break is a little obvious. Strings change their tone over time. Older strings sound off and are hard to tune right. They loose a lot of their brightness and clarity. If you haven't changed your strings for a while (or not at all as some people I know), change them! You will be amazed at how much better your guitar sounds. Different types of strings last differently depending on materials, coatings, gauge and how they are played. If you are using uncoated strings, then if they are dull looking or sounding, it is time. Do they look worn? - change them! If you are using high quality coated strings, they last much longer. I would change them once every month or two. New strings take a little while to stretch, settle in and stay in tune. After your first hour of playing, re-tuning a few times, they should be pretty good.

until they break, or until you feel uncomfortable playing with them, or until the strings start to corrode or rust
