For a guitarist that learned to play on a steel string acoustic with 1 year experience and wants to begin playing electric guitar, what brands/models of electric guitars and amplifiers make good choices? Consider a mid-range budget. Not too cheap, not too expensive. |

Probably try going for a branded copy - for example if you like Strats go for a Squire they are made by Fender. If you like Les Pauls go for an epiphone - Gibson sill make those. On the whole you can't go too far wrong with an Ibanez either, but for a first time buy do not order online till you have tried the guitar in a music shop. |

All the "name" brands usually have a wide variety of guitars at different prices. I'd love to tell you one guitar that will work but you need to go to a Music store and try them out. Listen to which matches the sound you're looking for. Do you play blues, rock, metal, country etc. See what "feels" right. If you like the sound a semi-hollow body, like B.B. King's Gibson(Though that particular guitar may be a tad expensive) would fit more like an acoustic under your arm. |

By midrange I'm going to guess you're talking like a 400$ budget? If that's the case Fender has a line of Stratocasters and Telecasters in that price range. You should be able to get an Epiphone SG in that range, and I'm a fan of the Ibanez Artcore hollowbodies myself. Just head over to a guitar website and you can usually just put your pricerange in the search filter and see all the guitars available at that point. Dont forget to save some for an amp! I also want to add that you should consider what kind of sound you're going for. Find out what kind of gear your favorite artists play and try them out. For example, Eric Clapton is a known Stratocaster player, but he also played a Les Paul in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and an ES-335 (Gibson hollow body)in the Yardbirds. In his autobiography he said he purchased his ES-335 because he liked the idea that he could play unplugged and still be heard. I like hollow bodies because it's easier to get feedback. Your amp also greatly affects your sound. Here are a couple of the more well known amp/guitar combinations you may want to try: Fender Statocaster/Telecaster into a Fender amp. Fender amps are low gain and sound clean. Gibson Les Paul into a Marshall. The classic high gain rock sound, think Led Zeppelin or AC/DC. Rickenbacker into a Vox. For that Beatles tone. If you're into metal I would say get something with EMG pickups and plug into either a Marshall, an Orange (eg Slipknot), a Randall (Dimebag Darrell and now Kirk Hammett), or a Krank (Dethklok). |

I'd suggest a Yamaha Pacifica 112. I owned one for a long time before I piced up a strat. http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews53763.html At the budget end I also like Washburn, but the Yam will take you a long way and probably be an easier resale/trade in later on. Ian |
