I occasionally put electric strings on my acoustic guitar. I just find the lighter gauge easier on the fingers. It's easier to play fast and bend notes. The sound is slightly less full than with the usual medium gauge acoustic strings but it's a worthwhile tradeoff for ease of play. My question is, will the lighter tension on the neck do long term harm to my instrument? Also, will my ability to play regular acoustic strings suffer? Anyone else out there doing this?

Shouldn't really hurt it. Although, depending on what strings the guitar was last set-up with, lighter strings could require a truss rod tweak since the tension on neck is different. Otherwise, it could cause some frett buzz.

I think so. Acoustic requires more finger strength which you will not properly develop and maintain by cheating with electric strings. In my opinion, if you plan to play an acoustic guitar, use acoustic strings on it.

No, I also find that electric strings are easier to play on my custom Martin, BUT the downfall is that the sound is compromised because electric strings are meant to create as much resonance as acoustic strings. Your ability won't be hindered, but your hands wont become as strong.

Electric stings even sound better on an acoustic! Acoustic strings suck... unless you have a really nice high end acoustic on which they sound great and dont have as much tension as the cheaper ones
