What are the best resources out there for learning to play the guitar? I am interested in beginners books, lessons, websites and gear. |

If you have a friend or family member who is also a beginner get them to learn some easy songs first. It is best just to get a simple songbook of a musician that you like, that shows the easy chords over the lyrics. Who cares if you can't sing them. This will teach you how to make easy chords, which by the way are pretty much what most guitarists play, and to change chords at the appropriate times. This will help your rhythm playing. I suggest not learning tab at this point, later is fine. Just get a dozen songs that you can easily play. You will start to notice how the same chords and progressions repeat. From there you can actually get some real music books and learn to read the notes. If having a teacher helps you then get one. Just make sure you keep it fun, no matter how hard you try. Don't let your frustrations overcome your desire. In the end, they all come together. |

A great resource is youtube. There are so many instructional videos it might take 200 years to watch them all. Also, getting a tab book of your favorite band and learn some of their material (pick the easy songs at first) and that will help you understand what's going on with the whole guitar playing thing. There are many great websites (that I just found) where you can learn for free.
As far as gear goes, this beginner strat bundle below from musiciansfriend for $179.00 should get you going. They have many others as well. Of course there is ebay and Craigslist too.
